When Sound Devastation Records emailed Seven Nautical Miles in 2007, the band had never sent out demos. They had just put out songs on Myspace. Despite the media noise the English record company found the band and thought they stood out enough to do a collaboration. At the time, the band was called Oceans Have No Memory after the Porcupine Tree song. But they had for some time thought about switching to a more personal name. When they signed the record contract, it felt naturally that they would be called Seven Nautical Miles, since it was just so far to the rehearsal room from where they lived.
2005 was the year when guitarist Simon Wärja and drummer Johan Nordlund began writing music that they had never tried before. They had played several different kinds of metal, rock and pop but never felt that they played music that touched them. Or anyone else for that matter.
They wanted to play music with beautiful melodies and crushing guitars. Music with strong emotions and great dynamics.
It was not long before the rest of the members fell into place and the band could start playing their music to the public. The band called themselves Oceans Have No Memory after Porcupine Tree's song with the same name. The first line-up was:
Simon Wärja, Johan Nordlund, Michael Holmberg, Day Falkman and Robert Holmström.
In 2007 Seven Nautical Miles got the mail from Sound Devastation Records. The record company said that it would be cool to a split EP with Seven Nautical Miles sometime in the future. After some emailing back and forth, it turned out that Sound Devastation Records was not only interested in releasing a split EP, and not in the future either. They wanted to release a full length album with Seven Nautical Miles, as soon as possible. During the same period Dag moved and left the band. But he also left behind a replacement which he presented to the band. Mathias Öystilä took over the vocals after Dag. Mathias also knew a great guitarist that fitted perfectly in the band, Henrik Nyström joined the band and filled the holes in the music perfectly.
In 2007 and 2008, Seven Nautical Miles worked with the debut album. Magnus Lindberg from Cult of Luna mastered the album. And Pierre Johansson made the cover, who previously made cover to Breach, among others.
With new singer and new band name Every Ocean Reversed was released in September 2008, and at the same time Seven Nautical Miles started a tour in Sweden.
They had been touring in Sweden and played at some of Swedens largest festivals and at several clubs in the country, but after the debut the band was met by adversity. The fans interest in the band was as always huge, but the interest of the band members decreased. More members leaved the band and moved to different parts of Sweden until almost all members had quit the band. It was only Mikael and Simon that remained. The two were still eager to continue to write the same kind of songs that they made, but with more heart and dedication.
Once again the members fell into place one by one.
In December 2010 the band began to record an EP containing two tracks. Since they were missing a singer, their sound engineer ,Marcus Garbom, offered to sing. His voice was perfect and he was hired immediately.
The recordings are in the final stages, in the time of writing, and gigs in Finland are booked. Festival appearances and European tour is being negotiated, so 2011 will be a fresh start for Seven Nautical Miles.
Members have come and gone but the two who wrote most of the band's music is still here and the thoughts about how music should sound like have never changed.
The band still offers a live show that you will never forget. They are still writing music that moves you, that arouses feelings within each one that they did not know existed.
It is hard and crushing as the ocean waves. It is quiet and calm as a lake.
The music is heavy, and very beautiful.
Seven Nautical Miles is:
Johan Öman, Tyler Voelz, Mikael Holmberg, Marcus Garbom and Simon Wärja
