Sometimes, less IS more. Sean's singular grind rock stands tall on the strength of only two pillars: keyboardist Luke Laplante and drummer Mike Peterson. Named via a phonetic play on their former incarnation as “Tion” (inspired by the prevalence of said suffix among death metal bands, SuffocaTION, IncantaTION, etc.), Sean has followed up their well-received first release (“Singers Ruin Perfectly Good Bands”) with another contentiously titled EP: “Bike Messengers Aren’t As Cool As They Think They Are”. Both clock in under 20 minutes, but still fully satisfy, like short but onslaught-packed boxing matches. And like a pair of crafty prize fighters, Sean throw down with memorable style: Mike Peterson’s many jazz-master inspirations (such as Jack DeJohnette and Shelly Manne) ride shotgun on 80’s thrash-metal overdrive – and Luke Laplante’s homage to Jon Lord (Deep Purple), Jan Hammer (Mahavishnu Orchestra) and Wayne Horvitz (Naked City) tweaks out to classic grindcore and powerviolence (ala Man is the Bastard and Carcass). Thankfully, the shredding instrumental maelstrom that slays forth emanates from gear-setups devoid of the gadget-overkills that often plague prog-minded musicians. This stripped down mentality is, of course, prevalent among punk influenced performers. However, Sean’s hardcore mindset is also rooted in Mike’s heavy-hitting jazz background. Having gone toe-to-toe with world class beatniks for way over a decade, he commands his minimal kit with manic, Viking-like authority - as if totally stoked at having an ideal ball and chain for the job at hand: rising up to the unrelenting challenges of Luke’s towering keyboard barrage. The resulting sound of Sean butting heads makes for a spectacle unlike any other, and, most importantly, for some bloody awesome tunes. – .this weirdo album fucking rips and comes hella recommended to fans of fast music, something different or something "good" and "new" in general!-

“The most blown-out, distorted, noise-ridden keyboards ever. This is instrumental, schizophrenic, million-changes a minute, drain bramaged, prog-grind insanity.”

Elliott Lange – Maximum Rock and Roll.

“The best way I can describe SEAN’s music in terms of specific genres would be as a mix of dirty old-school grindcore and jazz-fusion. Imagine this scenario: Repulsion and The Mahavishnu Orchestra mate and produce an epileptic crack-baby. This crack-baby is fed a hefty dose of speed just after the doctor slaps its monstrous ass. Whammo! SEAN is born.”

“Hearing this disc and seeing this band live are almost two completely different experiences, when you’ve got the disc going, everything seems to make a bit more sense, when their pounding away on stage, it’s almost maddening to try to see where they’re trying to go with what they’re doing. If you get the chance to witness one of their shows, get off your ass.” Philip Del Costello - www.indieworkshop.com.
