“.One of the best of the younger Brazilian rock musicians and songwriters is back with his third album, “3 Sessions in a Greenhouse.” Mr. Santtana comes from Bahia, and his whole world is the crossed wires of Afro-Brazilian rhythm, samba, dub reggae, rock and funk. If that sounds like a contrived fusion, you should gauge the power of this record. Here the high, scratchy strumming of the cavaquinho shares space with deep, cropped bass lines, and Jamaican-style horn arrangements with atmospheric guitar noise. It’s naturally polycultural and a great groove record. He has released it on his own label, Diginóis; until an American distributor is secured, some of the tracks can be downloaded at his Web site, diginois.com.br .”

"Lucas Santtana has been one the most promising figures in Brazilian music for nearly a decade, and he pushes the envelope hard on his third album, 3

sessions in a greenhouse(Diginois), favoring groove and ambience over songwriting. It's not that he doesn't know his way arround a sweet melody, but his longterm interest in funk and reggae elasticizes his compositions, where looping bass line, dubby horn charts and atmospheric keyboards resonate in a warm, leisurely glow. Tom Zé joins in a cover of his "Ogodô Ano 2000" and Santtana gives a tender if distant reading to "Into Sahde."
