SABRINA STARKE – YELLOW BRICK ROAD

- These yellow bricks have brought me this far. Can’t believe it, but I’m finally here. Been walking down this road like a lost child. Feeling so alone but now I found my home. -

On June 5, 2009 the new version of Sabrina’s debut album Yellow Brick Road has been released in Holland and Belgium. The album includes two brand-new songs Sabrina wrote in New York. The CD also features new artwork and an OpenDisc section. As an introduction to the album the single A Woman’s Gonna Try has been released on May 29.

Earlier this year, Sabrina worked in New York on a number of songwriting sessions with ace producer and songwriter Billy Mann and his team. Billy Mann has worked with artists such as Pink, Celine Dion, Carole King, Joss Stone, Sting and Mary J Blige. Sabrina: “We got together as a team a number of times and wrote songs. Although the intention was to come up with new material, the process itself was very relaxed and creative. This resulted in a number of new songs. We will keep some for the next album, but I really wanted the public to hear two of these songs right now.”

The two new songs are Home is You, which Sabrina wrote with Pete Wallace and Lisa Green, and A Woman’s Gonna Try, by Sabrina, Pete Wallace and Billy Mann. “Both songs are really me and are a perfect match with the other tracks on my CD. I really think that people who don’t know my CD yet, won’t be able to tell which two songs are new,” Sabrina comments.

Earlier she had this to say about her album Yellow Brick Road: “I’ve always been convinced that things will only fall in place when you are ready for it. You must take this process step by step, because that is the only way you can grow. Musically, but also as a human being. I am very focused on that and feel it is reflected in this album.” The title song Yellow Brick Road contains a broad outline of where Sabrina has been these past few years and where she is now.

Other songs on this album were inspired by people Sabrina met along the road, the places she has visited, and also the world around us. For example, Keep it Simple deals with the value of the simple things in life. It often seems everything has to be expressed in terms of money and luxury items. “Love is now measured with fortune and fame,” Sabrina sings. And it bit further on in the song: “Kids playing outside at the corner. But they don’t like that anymore / They like TV now / Jumping rope / Do you remember?” Of course, love is an important subject as well. The first single Do For Love is all about the power of love. You Are My Love, Romeo & Juliet, My King and the new track Home is You are also deeply felt love songs.

The song It’s Time is about the frantic pace of life that seems to have taken over nearly all of us. No time to take a moment out for others, let alone ourselves. In any case, Sabrina’s yellow brick road has taught her to take that time out more often. “My parents always used to say: Patience, Sabrina, your time will come. And they were right.” It is not only patience that is important, but working very hard as well. Sabrina has proven this beyond any doubt in these past few years. Her new single A Woman’s Gonna Try, about the perseverance of a woman, could not have been more to the point.

Recently, Sabrina completed a club tour and will perform live at a large number of big festivals. Sabrina can be heard and seen at IJazz, Parkpop and the North Sea Jazz Festival, among others. Check www.sabrinastarke.nl for all her live appearances
