RuBy

Ruby is an exciting and vibrant artist whose work fuses mainstream RnB/Pop and Soul. She writes all of her own material and draws inspiration from artists such as Brandy, Missy Elliot, Eva Cassidy and Stevie Wonder. Born in January of 1986, Ruby spent her early years living in Kent with her brother and sister. She had a strong grounding in music from a tender age as her stepfather was a folk singer and her father a blues singer. Despite the rich tapestry of sound in Ruby's household that ranged from Ska and ACDC to Motown and James Taylor, she was particularly drawn to RnB, known then as 'Swing', and trawled record shops for RnB legends like Keith Sweat and Joe Simon. Ruby also had a strong passion for Rap and Hip Hop which are musical genres with a rawand honest quality reflected in her own musical creations.



At the age of 16 Ruby left home but found herself in a turbulent relationship that eventually led her to move up to London. While mentoring kids with behavioural problems in Edmonton, north London she was introduced to the celebrated vocal coach Kevin Leo (Lemar, 411). Kevin sent Ruby on to soul singer Noel McKoy who took her under his wing and gave her the space and confidence to write her own material. Ruby worked with various producers while attempting to keep herself afloat through singing jazz, blues and soul in bars with pianist Costas Karageorghis. Ruby continued recording more of her own material with Mikis Michaelides (Doc Brown, Finley Quaye) and Timothy Mane. These young producers helped Ruby to shape her sound. She went on to have a strong presence in the grime and rap scene, collaborating with esteemed artists such as N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder, TinieTempa, Bruza, Black the Ripper, Frisco, Sway and Bless Beats and Mega, Target (Roll Deep/BBC1Xtra).



In recent months Ruby has been writing with and for other artists/producers including Annoymous, Danja Hands, Sabrina Washington, Patrik Patrikos (World Star Productions) Bless Beats, Ayak, Ali Tennant, and Giorgio (Piano Man). Ruby's tracks 'Catch My Breath', ‘Heartbeart', 'Resuscitate Me', 'Problems On My Own' ft Tinchy Stryder and Credit Crunch ft Bruza have enjoyed airplay on BBC1Xtra, KissFM and RinseFM. Meanwhile DJs such as Dynamite MC and Richard Blackwood have promoted and supported Ruby's work over the last two years.
