ROTS 1

Rots 1 is a hip hop artist out of Phoenix, Arizona. Like a lot of aspiring mcs, Rots first got his start in Hip Hop through local battles and ciphers. After capturing the attention of the local Hip Hop community, Rots began making connections not only with other mcs, but producers as well. It was at this time he began developing his writing style and started to focus more on making songs. In 2004, he dropped a demo titled, “The Door Is Open,” which was mainly given away at local shows/ as well as some out of state events, such as Scribble Jam. After receiving positive feedback from the demo, Rots began to work on his debut full length album, which would feature producers, Mike Gao, Emynd, and Meaty Ogre. Unfortunately, after collecting a majority of the beats for the album, there were some computer problems that led to a loss of more than half the original material. Rots spent the next year or so trying to rework the album, but without the lost material, the album was feeling incomplete. So, instead of releasing a full length album, he decided it was best to take the songs he had and release them as an EP. The “Lost In My Thoughts Again” EP is the end result.



Although the EP is fairly short in length, “Lost In My Thoughts Again” does a good job of introducing us to Rots 1’s music. Rots’ style consists of a raw, aggressive delivery mixed with subject matter primarily focusing on personal and social issues. However, he still manages to return to his roots in songs like “Everyone’s A Rapper” and “Lost In My Thoughts Again,” where clever, hard-hitting lines replace the more introspective, thought provoking lyrics found throughout the rest of the EP. The production for the EP includes beats from Mike Gao and Meaty Ogre (Galapagos4), Emynd (Vinyl Monkeys), Hiphopapotamus and Rots 1 himself, which for the most part resembles the traditional, grimy boom bap sound of the mid 90s. After listening to “Lost In My Thoughts Again,” it is easy to see the passion Rots has for creating music and the potential that lies ahead if he continues to do so, which he claims will be fully exemplified on his upcoming debut full length album. For his upcoming LP, Rots has teamed up with the incredibly talented producer, Maker (Galapagos 4/ Glue), to bring you 13 all new songs, which should be released sometime in the late part of 2009, so keep your eyes and ears open!
