The latest artistic project of the Brazilian performer Rosa Emilia is dedicated to the work of the lyricist Cacaso (1944-1987). This project is incorporated in a cd, "Álbum de Retratos - Cacaso Parceiros e Canções", recently launched by the record company Lua Music.
Luis Fernando Vianna, a critic of Folha de São Paulo, has written that «The result is intimate and delicate, in harmony with the poetic elegance of some tunes, such as "Eu te Amo", "Beira Rio" and of "Álbum de Retratos itself" ».
« With some rare exceptions, such as "Clarão", featuring Olivia Byigton – the tunes are not Cacaso's most known ones, thus offering the possibility to learn something more about the talent of the poet».
«Apart from being a record that features the evocative lyrics of the poet and composer Cacaso, Álbum de Retratos has two more merits: the intimacy between the singer and the work – Rosa Emilia and Cacaso have once been engaged – and the choice of a simple arrangement, basically piano or guitar, played by the songwriters (Sueli Costa, Joyce, Nelson Ângelo, Zé Renato and others)».
Biography
Born in Salvador de Bahia, the Piscean Rosa has been living on music since childhood, when she used to sing, dance and play the percussions at orixás parties with her grandma Emilia, venerated mãe-de-santo. She was only 14 when she recorded her voice for the first time, for radio advertising jingles. However, her artistic path developed in the prolific cultural environment of Rio de Janeiro, where she moved in 1983 and made her debut as a soloist with the album "Ultraleve".
In the end of the 80s she comes to Italy, which becomes her adopted country. From this moment, her career develops on two parallel fronts: the two different sides of the ocean. Her style reaches maturity in the fields of jazz and author music, through important collaborations: with Nelson Angelo, Sueli Costa, Danilo Caymmi, Jaques Morelenbaum and Nelson Motta in Brazil, in Italy with Fabrizio de Andrè - she records the Portuguese voices of "Princesa" in the cd "Anime Salve" – and with the pianist Renato Sellani, with whom she establishes an intense partnership.
During her eclectic musical path Rosa explores also other genres, like lounge music, with the group Batuk that records "Cruzeiro do sul" (2006), and reggae, with the album "Nega Rosa" (1996) and the collaboration with Pitura Freska. However, with "Baiana da Guanabara" (2006) and "Álbum de Retratos" (2009), she finds again her deepest inspiration, connected to the sounds and to the colors of her land. In January 29th, 2009, precisely twenty years after she left Brazil, Rosa lands in Rio de Janeiro in the occasion of the performance "Cacaso - Musica e Poesia", thus putting together her memories.
