Rick Chyme's lyrical wizardry and ability to connect to deeper truths evokes memories of a bygone age of soulful socal relevance in popular music while retaining the grit and spirit of Hip-Hop culture. "Truth music" – delivered with equal parts humor, spirit, and pathos.
His journey started in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he was born and lived until age five when his family moved to suburban, Rockford. As the years passed, Chyme played high school and college basketball, and developed an addiction to Hip-Hop. Intrigued by the art of freestyle, Chyme began rhyming about his surroundings while driving and discovered a natural affinity for devising lyrics on the spot. At this point, it was clear that Hip-Hop would play a major role in his life.
After graduation, Rick moved East where he began an internship at Island/Def Jam Records in New York City. Beginning as an Intern in Lyor Cohen's Lifestyle Marketing Department, he quickly advanced to Executive Assistant positions for both CEO LA Reid and General Manager Randy Acker, and witnessed the inner workings of the music industry first hand. In addition to his employment at Def Jam, work as music supervisor on Jay-Z's film, Fade To Black, provided him more valuable industry experience.
During this time, Rick was concurrently working as an independent A&R and spending many hours in studio sessions which eventually pushed him to the decision to dedicate himself to his own artistry, including a return to his Midwest roots.
Back in Michigan, Chyme furiously attacked stages, performing over 400 shows as a solo artist and a member of The Southpaw Players, including sets with The Gym Class Heroes, Talib Kweli, The Digable Planets, and Atmosphere. Rick's unique live performance is often highlighted by interactive freestyles ranging from audience chosen topics to objects being placed on the stage by members of the crowd.
Rick is currently crafting several EP's to be released under the name, 5iveit, with fellow group members Ryan K. Wilson(vocals, production) and Nixon(production). Chyme and Wilson are also working on a series of collaborative, individually commissioned compositions as part of their project, Your Song.
