Richie Sosa's story is one of overcoming the odds. Raised in an East Scarborough metro housing community by a single mother, his childhood and teenage years were clouded by turbulent and violent events. However, from a young age, it was clear to everyone around him that Sosa possessed a highly creative, outgoing and energetic personality, assets that would come to help him later in life. After spending the majority of his late teens in and out of correctional facilities, he found his route to redemption through music. Gun violence affected him greatly, with Sosa being the only member of his immediate family to have not been shot. He used his experiences to fuel his creative process, and transformed negative events into something which could create a better life for him and his family.
Today, Sosa's music not only reflects tumultuous past but also examines his comical view on everyday life. Sosa has been known for humorous and witty lyrics, believing that 'in life it's easier to laugh than cry.' His superior songwriting skills have garnered him a job writing pop songs and hooks for Multi-Platinum and Grammy nominated producer Boi-1Da. Self-proclaiming himself as the "Black James Dean," Sosa is also known for keen sense of style, staking his place in the Toronto urban community as a trendsetter.
As a veteran of the Canadian urban music community Richie Sosa has solidified himself as one of the country's most sought after musical exports. With numerous local number hits on Toronto's Flow 935, Sosa has also established himself on the radio south of the border. He has had various singles charting over 1000 radio spins on major American radio including Hot97 and Shade45. Sosa also recognizes the importance of releasing consistent and solid material. He has appeared on over 500 mixtapes including those hosted by industry heavy weights, DJ Whoo Kid, DJ Absolute, DJ Clue, DJ Green Lantern, Dj Skee, DJ Big Mike, The Evil Empire, DJ Scream as well as appearing on DJ Drama's highly regarded Gangster Grillz series.
Sosa also recognizes the importance of having a strong online presence. Between 2009 and 2010, he released over 50 original and freestyle records which he self-serviced to approximately 300 urban music blogs. His material was positively embraced by the blogging community, garnering posts on many prominent blogs including the prestigious New Music Cartel conglomerate. Being able to interact with his fans has always been a strong point of Sosa's career. He has toured alongside his good friend and collaborator Drake as well as opened for musical superstars NeYo, Talib Kweli and Mos Def.
Sosa looks forward to releasing a slew of new material. In a contemporary genre like hip-hop, Sosa is constantly striving to create timeless music that he whole heartedly believes will connect with today's listeners, tomorrow's and the generations of music fans that follow. Building on his budding success, Sosa has ambitious plans to build a brand that can expand beyond music.
