RED INK are not your average band, they are not here for a quick rise to the top, to jump on a style trend or to ride a wave of hype. These guys are musicians, good ones. And over the last four years they have proved that they are here to do the yards. Their hundreds of gigs across the country and thousands of hours crafting their sound have paid off in the form of an underground following strong across Australia and sinking its claws in across the world. They have found a sound which is uniquely theirs and defies conformity along clichéd genre lines.
On the verge of dropping their debut EP we’ve been craving, RED INK have given us a first taste of what is to come with their new single Catching a Killer. It is 3 minutes of violence, pop and adrenaline, with a chorus that will jam through your mind for days. The slurred audacity of John Jakubenko’s vocals takes your mind straight back to your craziest house party and that teetering feeling that things could get out of control – but no matter what you’re gonna have a blast.
Catching a Killer has already been proved to choke up dance floors of basement bars across Aus, but before it’s release had already sparked controversy. The song comes from RED INK’s experiences of street violence in Melbourne, and along with a poster of the boys acting out a brawl was interpreted by some as ‘pro-violence’, leading to boycott calls and posters being ripped from venue walls. “We are in no way pro-violence” says front man John, “but we are for representing the truth of the streets of Melbourne and we don’t apologise for it’s ugliness shaping our music”.
The track was recorded in Melbourne by Forrester Savell and mixed in the U.K by Barny (who has previously mixed for Kasabian, Muse, Lily Allen, Arctic Monkeys) and is fit to hit international airwaves. RED INK have a hungry European fan base and are being featured regularly on influential blogs across the UK, US and Europe; in Aus they have shared stages with British India, Calling all Cars, Miami Horror, Children Collide, Wolf & Cub and deluged the summer festival circuit. So with their fans hungry and an EP loaded with hits, it looks like these boys from Frankston, Australia are in for the ride of their lives.
