Way back in about 1989, Mike Richards and Shawn Cummings started doing weird things. They recorded a bunch of "songs" on cheap tape recorders and made an "album" or two using a little Keytar and 2 coffee cans as drums with carved pencils as drumsticks. After a creative break, several years later, at about the age of 15, the two of them -with a couple more friends helping here and there- started making art and art music together and recording the art music on 4 track cassette. They sold "albums" with photocopied artwork to their friends in their podunk town high school (FIELDCREST HIGH SCHOOL -MINONK, IL), and distributed a few tapes abroad. By "abroad" i mean Bloomington/Normal Illinois, and a few penpals. They ended up making about 13 of these albums just there in high school. Shawn and Mike set up some crazy performances where about 3 people showed up to see their extremely abstract tunages. 'Round about '98 Mike, Shawn, and this other salad crouton called "DUSTO" decided to perform some stuff on HALLOWEEN so they needed a band name. The name "rebekah's tape" was taken from a cassette they made for a friend named Rebekah. They continued onward into the future using this 'live band' format, but still made random oddball recordings on the side.and about 10 more "albums" came about,on CDR though.with cover arts.
Presently you may find rebekah's tape to be working on their 7th "album", which will be more highly produced and tweaked than any previous effort, and with more conceptual focus.
More information on this topic may be found on the INTANGIBLE CAT website -an ongoing art project in itself, where the abridged catalog of their recordings may be perused, selections of artwork viewed, and informations may be gleaned. Please have a look: www.intangiblecat.com
