Well everyone, this is my feeble and humble attempt at introducing myself… or maybe just updating you all on my life to date as the year 2009 slowly checks out. SO much to share, so much to remember, and so much to hope for in the future.

Let me start by saying that if there is anything that I’ve learned in the past 10 years, it is to slow down and enjoy the day that I am living in. To be present and available to God and life and opportunities. So as I recollect the past, please know that it is only a tiny piece of the puzzle that my life represents, and I mention these things only to lead you to today.

I was born in Ann Arbor, MI but grew up in the small town of Louisville, CO just outside of Boulder, I shared a house and a childhood with my amazing parents and amazing siblings: Ryan, Colleen, and Nate. We all held hands through some hard financial times, sibling quarrels, a divorce, and many other life-altering events. Somewhere in the mix, I managed to sign a record deal with Word Records when I was 14 and was sent off on a whirlwind of touring, promoting and recording for the next 8 years. Some of my adventures included an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The View, ET, CNN, the privilege of recording at Abbey Road Studios in London, and a performance for the Pope in Rome in 2000. I had the honor of touring with some heroes and friends of mine including Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Nickel Creek, TobyMac, and many other incredibly talented people…I was so blessed.

Five records, eight years, and a couple inches later, I started to find myself in a different place than I had started. I had different questions, different answers, different goals and different reasons. I think I was growing up…

As the first order of business in sorting through all of this, I made the scary decision of leaving the record label that I called home for so long. With much blessing and understanding, I was free to explore the quiet and simplicity of life that I think I needed to really start asking God the big questions. The big questions that I had thought I had the answers to all those years. While I wasn’t always getting black and white, yes or no answers, I was often finding PEACE. Throughout this time, I continued to stay true to my love for two things: I loved God, and I loved music. So I continued to do the only thing that made sense…I continued to write songs. Songs about anything and everything I felt like God was just telling me to be ME. And it was out of that very simple, yet profound thought that we started to create “Human”, my newest album (which I am eagerly awaiting it’s December release!) With this in mind, I wrote songs about trusting God with a move from Nashville to L.A. (“Close to the Sun”), being in a relationship that wasn’t good for me (“Loving You”), and a beautifully unexpected love that nearly knocked me off my feet (“Avalanche”). On the title track, “Human” (featuring Jonny Lang), I am more vulnerable and more honest than I may have ever been. I am honest about who I am and the role that I play in this world of ours. It may not be the role everyone expects me to play, but I believe it’s the role that God created me to play. The imperfect, confused, needy HUMAN role.

It is quite obviously a different direction for me and I am excited to see who and where it reaches, I like to think that listeners of my past records have grown with me and can identify with these songs. I hope and pray that these songs off Human will challenge all of us to allow God into all areas of our lives, our relationships, our careers, our insecurities… the tough stuff. Okay, okay, enough of the new album…let’s wrap up my story!

After an eventful summer of touring and getting ENGAGED (yes it’s really true!!), I am back living in Nashville, TN. And Music City, USA is a great place to call home. It has been quite the journey and in looking back and looking ahead there may be only one thing I can say for sure… I am thankful for the people. What a gift to have so many different and great people in my life. People like you.

Thanks for taking time to read this and I hope we can continue to be a part of each others’ lives by way of music. Love you all!

Rachael
