Music can be contagious, inspiring and poignant. Quinto Sol (QS), Fifth Sun, or Inic Macuilli Tonatiuh, in Nahuatl, carries that type of emotion and sound deeply rooted in the Americas, Caribbean and Africa. QS is a Los Angeles based group that emerged from the artist/activist community of East Los Angeles in 1993. QS is roots reggae at its core, woven seamlessly with cumbia, salsa, reggae, R&B, dance hall, Latin soul, and, in some instances, a synthesis of these musical genres and more. QS has twice been awarded “Best Latin Artist of the Year” two consecutive years (2004 & 2005) by the prestigious LA Weekly Magazine.

QS is a collective of musicians, inspired to use music as a critical pedagogy, creating awareness of socio-political and economic issues facing their community. QS Sol does this by incorporating their own urban realities in everyday life and the struggles of indigenous communities throughout the world, while sending conscious lyrics and powerful live performances.

In the early 1990s QS released various demos and live recordings, including the compilation Sociedad=Suciedad released by BYO Records. In 1998 QS released Cuicacalli, a double cd, featuring Fidel Nadal and Pablo Molina of Todos Tus Muertos from Argentina. Four years later, QS released Barrio Roots, featuring Raul Pacheco and Ulyses Bella of Ozomatli, produced and arranged by Mizraim Leal, the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist. And in 2005 QS is featured on Planamu Sound's Root & Culture Mix (mixed tape cd), which features some of the most prominent voices of the Latin Reggae movement today. QS’s third, and most anticipated, album, Spirits of the Martyrs, and Martyrs in Dub, mixed by Hopeton Brown (legendary Scientist of Jamaica), are to be released in March of 2009. Another album to be released in 2009 is the long-awaited Quinto Sol and Friends, featuring Gregory Issac, Alika (of Argentina), Fidel Nadal (of Argentina), H.R. (Human Rights/Bad Brains), Junior Toots (son of legendary Toots and the Maytals), Rastrillos (D.F. Mexico), Amlak Tafari (England) and Rob Symeonn and others.

From the reggae/cumbia song “Escucha” to Chicano oldies inspired “Una Vela” to the uptempo cumbia/salsa song “Vida” takes you on a worldbeat tour, unlike any reggae band around the music circuit today. QS has also backed up renown artists, live and in studio, such as Lutan Fyah (Jaimaca), Half Pint (Jamaica), Yami Bolo (Jaimaca), Abja (St. Corix), Fidel Nadal (Argentina), Alika (Argentina), Natty Congo Crew (Guadalajara, Mex.), and even translated the lyrics of Junior Reid’s “One Blood” into Spanish, of which he released on his Rasta Government album, amongst other great works. QS throughout the years has shared the stage with various artists, such as the Wailers ,

Third World ,Eek-a-Mouse, Barrington Leavy, Israel Vibrations, Max Romeo, Maldita Vecindad, Tierra, Gran Silencio, Poncho Sanchez, Steel Pulse, KRS One, Dead Prez, Psycho Realm, Sonora Dinamita , Gondwana, and many more too numerous to mention. In addition QS is a frequent performer in some of California’s biggest events, as well as international festivals, such as Reggae on the River, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, UCLA’s Reggae Jazz Festival, Monterrey Bay Reggae Festival, Tribute to the Legends Concert (Tijuana Mex., San Diego), Raggamuffins Festival, Caribbean Sea Breeze Festival, We the People Festival, Fuji Rock Festival (Japan), Del Mar Fair, Festival Extremo (Mexico), and the World Beat Center Music Festivals. Ultimately, QS has acquired an international fan base that is as diverse as the musical fusion they produce.

QS is Mizraim Leal (lead vocals, guitar 1), Martin Perez (bass guitar), Abel Gonzalez (Tenor Saxophone), Bernie Bran (percussions), Sal Magallon (timbales), Mark Spiller (drums), Jeremy Park (keyboards), David Ortega (congas), Guillermo Tejeda (guitar 2, back up vocals), Max O’Leary (trumpet), Joaquin Pacheco (alto saxophone), Professor Sandoval (spoken word).
