Alvin Singleton’s love for music stems from memories of listening to James Brown records with his father. Singleton, better known as Pop, became particularly enamored with the “It’s A Man’s World” record. Pop’s sister also put him on to radio stations, such as 99.7, 89.1, and 105.7, that spun both old and new music mixed with cutting and scratching. Pop’s interest soon expanded into throwing local block parties with others that shared his love for music.

One day Pop ran into his friend Dame Grease who would soon go on to be one of Hip Hop’s most acclaimed producers. Grease had needed a ride up to Yonkers for a studio session, and Pop’s love for the craft left him happy to give Grease the ride. At the studio, DMX was busy laying vocals on various Grease tracks, most of which would end up on X’s classic debut album It’s Dark & Hell Is Hot. The LOX, Meeno, and Big Stan were also recording at the time as well.

Unfortunately, Pop was arrested for an observation sale in 1997 and faced a sentence of 7-14 years. The careers of both DMX and Dame Grease skyrocketed soon after Pop’s incarceration, and Pop often saw his close friends on television screens and magazine covers. Despite his situation, Pop did not let his jail sentence infringe upon his musical talent. Pop purchased a Casio keyboard and began teaching himself the craft of making beats and producing tracks.

In June of 2003, Pop was finally released and immediately met up with Grease. Though happy he was out of prison, times were still difficult and Pop was living in a halfway house. Grease and Pop spent time going through new music that Grease had produced. Their friendship was still strong, and Pop soon became the engineer at Grease’s Lot Musik Studios.

Though his work as an engineer keeps him busy, Pop continues to work on his production in between sessions. As an engineer at Lot Musik, Pop has had the opportunity to record many of Hip Hop’s heavyweights. Pop recorded three of the songs for DMX’s most recent album Year of the Dog…Again. Pop has also had the chance to work sessions for Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Lord Tariq, Meeno, Big Stan, Mysonne, Tanya ‘T6’ Dormevil, Jane Doe, Dame Grease’s group the Lenox Ave Boyz, and many others.

Also, be on the look out for “Ridin’ Slow,” the brand new Tanya ‘T6’ Dormevil hit which was produced by Pop.
