The Chronicles of Mijas Magnum:

Pherber Jones, Paul Bayze, and David Quintanar joined forces December 1991 in Pherber's garage. Savvy after playing tunes from Fugazi, The Cure, Joy Division, and The Pixies, they began arranging originals. Pinhead's first gig was as early as 1992, at a little hole-in-the-wall bar in Pomona called Munchies.

The band gained fans and experience as a trio fronted by a diminutive yet powerful woman playing aggressive guitar and vocals, supported by David’s straight-edge drumming and Paul’s killer hooks on bass. People came in droves to see them at the Coffeehouse, Cup of J, and The Haven in Pomona. In 1993 they ventured out to Hollywood to play The Roxy, The Whiskey A Go-Go, The Coconut Teazer, The Chorus Club, Club Underground, Mr. T’s Bowl, The Garage, The Martini Lounge, and The Cat Club.

In 1994, the band gained stage presence with the addition of Eric Ruelas as soulful lead guitarist. The combination of the quartet’s talents brought about a newfound identity and respect among the local bands in Pomona’s post modern punk scene.

They have traveled north to play the California coastal cities of San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Jose, Santa Rosa, Berkeley, south to San Diego, and east to Phoenix and Tempe, AZ, all the while building audience strength and approval. The band performed live at the Irvine college radio station KUCI 88.9FM and KWSS 106.7 FM.

Since inception, the quartet have come out with several recordings. The demo “Out of Reach” featured songs like the popular “Despised,” having a sinister punk groove. The album entitled “Scrape Away” featured songs including the melodic “Falling In.” The “Drive” E.P. showed the band’s progression with songs like guitar-driven “Dagger” and “Thirteenth.” The next E.P. entitled “Contact High” had positive feedback with the inspiring “Ecstasy” and the guitar rock angst of “Resin” and “Straight-laced.”

In the summer of 1996, the quartet ventured into a genre they coined “Sexy Space Rock,” as Mijas Magnum (defined as daughter’s gun). The quartet found itself sharing instruments and ideas, with every switch of each instrument leading to more songs. The collaboration was asked to score the student film Becoming. The songs Mijas Magnum crafted were meant for people to experience as live performances. Synthesizers, guitars (distorted or seductive) encompassing it all, and finally Pherber’s vocals, as a direct cadence or a soft lullaby, guiding you through. The band would not only change their set list, but also instruments. The quartet performed with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Autumns, reaching audiences in the Southern California, including Spaceland and the Silverlake Lounge in Silverlake, CA.

The quartet’s newest E.P. entitled “Surfing the Afterlife,” under the previous band name of Pinhead, featuring the single “Cabin Fever,” captures the band’s essence with Pherber’s harmonies supported by rock-driven instrumentation. Also on the album are the dark poetic rhythms of “Morphine”, the bass-fuzz driven track of “All For Money,” the more lively “Life’s A Gas,” and a better-than-the-original rendition of The Damned’s “Neat Neat Neat.”

Mijas Magnum is a group of friends whose focus is to fill your soul with music from their own.

To all our family, friends and fans, much love and thanks for your support all these years!
