Phil Brown is a music industry veteran who made his own breaks by brilliantly reinventing the music of the most influential guitarist in the history of rock and roll. The Jimi Project adds to this legacy, rather than merely spitting out copped licks and sounds.
The 55-year-old Brown has turned the Hendrix songbook into a vehicle for his playing and singing, which is refreshing considering that most Hendrix tributes are content to tip their caps to the original tunes. His "Purple Haze" is a perfect example, with its great laid-back feel that doesn't play the familiar head until Brown is well into the song. His playing is about as unclichéd as it gets; he's got a big sound, with surprising interval leaps and noises popping out everywhere. And on every cut you can feel that Brown is not in a hurry. Things build nicely, which gives him the chance to play tastefully while maintaining Hendrix's fire (no pun intended). Vocally, he brings to mind Bowie, but is always his own guy. In the second verse of "Purple Haze," the music stops, and the urgency in his voice is stunning. "One Rainy Wish" is done as a beautiful soul ballad with great singing, chordal work, and a solo that'll rip your heart out. "If 6 Was 9" captures the funkiness and features great chord work and a solo with middle eastern roots and a psychedelic feel.
There are 12 Hendrix classics, all with Brown's unique bite -- surprising, and always soulful. Aided by Jimmy Haslip (bass) and Gary Novak (drums), the arrangements help the "swing" shared by all of the cuts.

I've been a huge Hendrix fan all of my life, and never thought I'd see his vibe and soul come through in someone else's playing. Phil has accomplished just that. His interpretation of, in my opinion, some of the greatest songs ever written, is simply stunning. I think not only would Jimi approve, he'd be proud. I look forward to hearing more from Phil, and can't wait to see a live performance. A must-have CD.

I purchased my first decent tribute album in 1999, when an Elvis impersonator/postal worker from Belfast, Ireland, named James Brown released an album of songs by deceased artists, including a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile." Several years later, blues guitarist, vocalist, producer, and former Los Alamos resident Phil Brown (no relation to James) has released an album recorded in Los Angeles in 2005 of lush and astounding Hendrix covers that go way beyond mere mimicry of the original material. Last year, Brown confided in me that The Jimi Project is the product of his "lifelong obsession with one of the world's most revered axmen." Timeless Hendrix songs like "Manic Depression," "Ain't No Telling," and "Spanish Castle Magic" get a fluid Phil Brown makeover with no skimping on gutsy guitar riffs and wailing vocals. Brown brings his talents to this self-produced gem, invoking Clapton-like finesse, Stevie Ray Vaughan's vocal range, and a touch of playfulness in the style of blues darling Jonny Lang.
