Coming from Timisoara, Romania’s first communism- free city, PERSONA is hardly trying or willing to start a new musical revolution. They joined the difficult but blessed mission of playing rock n’ roll in its rawly beautiful energy yet refined form. Their music was labeled as brit pop (impossible: they are not British), indie (what’s that exactly?), alternative (well, I don’t know), pop (not likely, they use and abuse guitars), but they are neither of these. Or are they? The truth is that the songs are the true tellers of the tale and the 4 lads are merely their slaves.

Beautiful urban landscapes of sounds and mixed feelings and good moods, quiet introspection, accompanied by the seductive intensity of guitars, pure energy and positive vibe, sophisticated bass lines and explosive or warm drums, smooth acoustic guitar, nostalgia but optimism also are overlapping in their songs and are defining the PERSONA aestethics, making their audience explore different degrees of joy through their music.

For the debut album "Suburbia Afterlife", PERSONA polished an exquisite yet original sound, celebratory and serious, melodramatic and classy rock n roll with pop hooks here and there, sometimes joyful and optimist, artful and cocky, that will not allow the audience to remain seated while enjoying it.

The story so far…

The group was formed in 2003 in Timisoara (Romania), the name being inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s movie “Persona”. The band members belong to the new generation of Romanian musicians that bloomed after the anticommunist revolution of December 1989 and they all have been involved in the music scene since then, playing in several bands before forming Persona.

In early 2004, Persona had had their first concerts, being enthusiastically received by the public and the local media, which quickly labeled them as “the Brit band of Timisoara”. In autumn of 2004, Persona had recorded the first 2 demo songs – Home in the Arms and Computer Breakdown which were aired at the local radios. Following that year, they were invited by TVR (Romanian public television channel) to film a live video for “Murder”. Later on, in 2007, Persona had entered the studio again and recorded 2 new songs – A Ride on Love Street and Momentary Lack of Passion – very appreciated by the public.

In 2008, Persona continued to tour Romania’s major cities and festivals, sharing the stage with bands such as dEUS (B), Kultur Shock (USA), Air Traffic (UK), Trash Fashion (UK) and Robots in Disguise (UK).

2009 started well for Persona – Momentary Lack of Passion has reached no 1 position in Romanian Top at CityFM Radio. Also Persona was interviewed by PRO TV (Romanian commercial television) for Apropo TV, a show promoting bands from the indie scene and chosen as the best band by its viewers with over 15000 votes cast on Internet. 2009 means also, the first concert outside Romania, in the famous Budapest club A38, together with Urma and Kumm from Romania and Jacked and The Hated Tomorrow from Hungary, concert dedicated to the memory of Marian Cosma, the Romanian handball player murdered in an unfortunate incident in Hungary. In July, PERSONA played at B’estfest in Bucharest, sharing the same stage with bands like The Charlatans, Looptroop Rockers, The Ting Tings and Santana.

2010 means the release of their first album entitled “Suburbia Afterlife”, recorded at DS Studio in Timisoara and mastered in Germany at Melting Point by Sven Bonse, the sound technician of German group Reamonn. The album is released by the German label EMG. The first single “Head on the door” is played in heavy rotation over national or local radios, entering no 4 position in Radio Guerrilla’s Topshow from first week of being aired.

Tom Wilson from Elle Magazine Romania wrote about the album: “I am very glad to give ‘album of the month’ award to a Romanian band, especially that the band is Persona from Timisoara. Their debut album contains ambitious pop songs and entertaining parts, wrapped in a pleasant cover, and radio friendly.”

The album was also released in Germany in summer of 2010, where Persona also played 2 shows, more being already scheduled for spring of 2011.

The band’s music is, indeed, one of British influence but cannot be strictly labeled – the musical background and influences of each of the members, refined by the experience and artistic maturity blend together in the PERSONA genre.
