Growing quietly in the shadows of the folk forest, a host of little acorns reach for the light. Deep underground, the roots of old ancients, ten score thick with rings, still reach for nourishment. While the old tinker's bandwagon passes through to the sound of humdrum strum and low-fi acouschtick, the sturdy People Tree feeds fresh, green shoots and gnarled old bark alike.

Herein then a curate’s egg of folk and folky from here and now and way back when. New artists testing the strengths of folk’s outermost branches mingle with those whose work lies deep in the heart of the wood and all is harmony ‘neath the boughs and sprigs of the People Tree. Circulus’ ethereal take on mediaeval jiggery, The Eighteenth Day of May’s gorgeous folky psych and Katy Carr’s lusty, sultry ballads show the new recent branches to be sturdy enough, as does the new work of Mother Earth’s Matt Deighton. Marked & Joff rework ‘Corn Rigs’, the jolly opener from the phantasmagoric Wickerman whilst Monique Maasen and Holly sway gently in the brisk folk breeze and Grand Union bring light to the unfurling fronds. Joy, Jinraie and Wicca’s World bring you misplaced troubles that are soon put to nest with a lullaby, and over yonder, where the fish jump and the river bends, hearken to the straightalkin’ Cry Earth. At the foot of the tree, 70’s songbird Marianne Segal rustles the folk litter with Circulus, and rediscovered folk mistress Linda Perhacs sings out to the paper mountains beyond the timberline. Beneath the ground, the entwined genius of John Martyn and mercurial master Bert Jansch (here with a deft and beautiful live recording from 1974) nourish the very heart of this arboreal delight.

The roots may be a long way from the leaves, that be known, but they are united in the People Tree good folk; they are united in the People Tree.
