This first in a series of EP releases kicks off with an absolute humdinger of a classic rock song. The trademark harmonies and meshing guitars of “Evolution Blues” (it’s not a blues, by the way) brings to mind the glory days of Thin White Rope and Big Dipper. The rest is fantastic too, with J. Chris Smith’s yearning vocals and melancholy themes on “Life Is Mostly Waiting” and a sharp take on Neil Young’s “Mr Soul.” The greatest compliment that could be paid to “Experienced Bar Band Seeks Situation” as it reaches its raging guitar coda is that it, too, could have been a Neil Young song. This band is real. Do not allow it to pass under your radar. ~ Oliver Gray

Patty Hurst Shifter - TOO CROWDED ON THE LOSING END
Fans of, let's say, Big Star, The Replacements and, of course, the Stones' eternal swagger, will get a huge kick out of this. The second LP from J. Chris Smith's literate, thrilling quartet is a classic of delinquent rock'n'roll bravado, barroom heartache, carnal testimony, all the regrets that come with reckless living and ruinous women. It's familiar territory, largely. But the urgent dispatch of swashbuckling rockers like "When You Lie", "She's Like A Song" and "All Washed Up", with Marc E. Smith's elemental guitar loudly to the fore, are rowdily irresistible. PHS are simultaneously great at mournful reflection- the soulful "Sadder Side", with Ian McLagan on Hammond B3, is especially stirring. The 10-minute "Acetylene", meanwhile, is an epic of self-immolating regret that folds into the brief and thoroughly rueful "Worth 2:11AM", a singular highpoint. ~ Allen Jones

1am, B.D. Riley's Having drawn comparisons to the True Believers and Replacements, Raleigh's Patty Hurst Shifter could be the next great American rock band. The young foursome have a new, limited-edition EP, Fugitive Glue (Pants on Fire), featuring live recordings, acoustic material, demos, and outtakes, and soon begin work on a follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed Too Crowded on the Losing End. – Jim Caligiuri
