biography:
Ditching a career
halfway down the halls of power, paqman made the move from Canberra
to the greener, more hip pastures of Melbourne last year. Since
trying to make their way up from the bottom yet again, the big beat
duo have refined their experimental electronic sound to something a
little more indie, a tad bit hip hop, dark like the backroom, and a
whole lot more dancefloor friendly. Paqman incorporate deep melodics
and huge beats around a grinding analogue sound, pioneering a new
trend in electronic music that's ready and able to shake the genre to
its roots. A sound that will make electro giants rethink the
direction of dance music.

Having supported
the big names in dance since the age of fifteen (Endorphin, Akufen,
The Aston Shuffle, Space Tribe, Spoonbill and Gareth Emery to name
but a few), the now 20 year olds have been consistently producing
electronica the likes of which are rare to find. When not in the
studio the two are frequently in transit between their two hometowns,
playing shows from all ages events to clubs and outdoor dance
festivals such as Dragon Dreaming. After winning the approval of
prog-houser Jaytech, their talents were recognised by a sixty minute
live set aired on Triple J's 'Mix Up'. Shortly after they placed
second in a global remix competition for the song Salmon Dance, by
their big beat heroes The Chemical Brothers. In 2007 they self
released a progressive concept album titled 'Deux' cementing them as
valuable contributors to the Canberran music scene, and not as your
average cookie-cutter house producers.

But the band also
draw influence from well outside the dance genre. Progressive rock
outfits Tool and The Mars Volta pull the boys in one direction,
whilst hip hop trendsetters Dr Dre and the Wutang Clan pull in
another. Mellow and melodic duo Air, along with heavyweights Daft
Punk, inspire paqman with the golden era of French house. But it's
the sound of '95 - '97, that of the big beat movement, pioneered by
their idols The Chemical Brothers that motivate the boys in their
homebuilt studio of dirty machines and smoke. Their music is
screaming from the rooftops for a big beat revival; and it's just
about their time.

'A
paqman live show is astonishing, two young men, hidden behind a
mountain of electronics, drum machines, synthesisers and noise
generators, a non stop sweaty interaction between man and machine.'

“.And
it was in that side room, nicknamed the ‘Attick', that
the night, out of nowhere, slapped me promptly
upside the left side of the face and told me to pay attention.
Paqman,
an act I chide myself for being unfamiliar with, were cranking out
the most wonderfully weird live set I've heard in a long time.
Synthesizing everything from dub and low BPM drum and bass to tweaky
psychedelica, solid melodics and deep beats, their performance
thoroughly confused me in the best way possible.” -
