ENGLISH BIO

Palmeras Kanibales

biography.

In the early 90's, a group of musicians from Caracas- Venezuela had something in common: a quest of ska sounds. They decided to start their own band in May 1992 and PALMERAS KANIBALES was born.

In October, they played their first official show along with other local, punk and hardcore bands. People were celebrating the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ landing in America, but these ‘cannibal palm trees’ were protesting against it!

In May of 93 they participated in the “Nuevas Bandas” VI Festival.

In 1994 an audio-cassette named “Basurero” (‘Garbage lot’) was edited in Puerto Rico. It was a sample of the alternative and Latin sounds of the time.

In 1995 they started recording their first CD motivated by the band “Desorden Publico”. This first attempt in the studio had to be postponed and finished two years later due to financial reasons.

During 1996 they participated actively in political and social street events. The band’s following in the underground scene grew to the point that, in 1997, they were invited to an International Art event: ‘VI Encuentro Internacional de Arte Popular’ organized by CLETA at Mexico City. This was the first international experience the band ever had, and led to a tour comprised of 23 shows throughout different Mexican states. Their music supported political insurgence in the states of Chiapas and Guerrero. Also in the ‘Circuito Musical Alternativo’ in Mexico City”, Oaxaca and San Luis Potosí. A video sample of one of these shows was recorded, originating the album “Nos tendran que reventar” (‘they’ll have to kill us’).

In 1998 they wrote, recorded, produced and sold their first independent record “13 Súper kañonazos Bailables Vol. 13”. Later that year, they were invited to ‘Encuentro de Teatro Popular Latinoamericano (ENTEPOLA)’, a Latin American Theather Festival in Santa Fe, Argentina. Playing shows with bands such as Karamelo Santo, Actitud Maria Marta, Resistencia Suburbana, etc, they found ways to please Buenos Aires crowd.

In March of ’99, they went back to Mexico, to the ‘VII Encuentro de Arte Popular de Cleta’, but this time besides playing gigs among 5 states, they played at the “I Encuentro de EZLN con al sociedad civil” in the Mexican forest Lacandona. Back to Caracas they were nominated to Best Band 1998 by “Urbe”, and won the ‘Best Ska Album 1998’ award. They were also awarded by the specialized radio show ‘Radio Pirata’ as ‘Best Ska Band of the 90’s’. In November they returned to ENTEPOLA, Santa Fe, and hit the road until 2000 when their tour across Montevideo and Buenos Aires finished.

They started producing their new album in 2000. In August, the band played at the Carnivals of La Habana, Cuba; and in Olguin city in September. In November they started recording their 2nd album at Anide Studio. It was finished in 2001, released in November and titled ‘Siempre comemos con hambre’ (‘we always eat when we’re starving’).

In 2002 they were invited to ‘X Fiesta del Caribe’ in Santiago de Cuba, where they played 7 shows. The mix of Afro Latin American genres was being represented, as well as the local independent movement. During 2003 they got involved in Caracas underground cult following.

In October 2004 they went back to Mexico and visited cities such as: Guanajuato, Monterrey, Tlaxcala and Mexico City. As soon as they got home again, the band ‘Skatalites’ (who were in Venezuela for 2nd time) invited them to open their show. Later, in November, Palmeras Kanibales toured Europe for the first time, playing 13 shows in 6 countries.

In January 2005, a Venezuelan delegation was sent to the Global Social forum: ‘Foro Social Mundial’, and the band traveled along, and played 7 gigs in 5 days. In June, they toured Europe for 2nd time and played 20 shows in 6 countries. In August they participated in ‘El Tortazo’ at Bogota, Colombia. In December, ‘CONAI: Confederacion Indigena del Ecuador’ invited the band to “Quitu Raymi” at Quito, Ecuador. It was a rewarding experience to support this sort of event, organized by indigenous people, in order to disregard the Spaniard’s colonization celebrations that were being carried out at the moment. In October they started producing their 3rd album.

In April 2006 they headed South to carry out an independent tour in Brazil (Sao Paolo) and Chile (Santiago & Valparaiso cities). In September they edited their 3rd independent album named after the band’s cross roads style, “La Ruta”, name given also to their 3rd European tour. La Ruta tour got them traveling among various countries such as Germany, Holland, Austria, France and England.

In 2007, Palmeras Kanibales plays in Chile (Santiago and Valparaiso), Argentina (Cordoba and Buenos Aires) and Perú (Lima). This is their 2nd independent Southamerican tour. Between June and August, their 4th european tour includes Holland, England, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and The Check Republic, with a total of 23 gigs.

In 2008 Palmeras Kanibales tours South America, independently, for the 3rd time. The band plays in Santiago and Valparaiso cities (Chile), Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Sao Paolo, Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

Between June and August 2008, the band toured in Europe for the 5th time, adding Italy to the places visited.

In 2009 Palmeras worked hardly in Venezuela, becomimg part of "LA LIGA", and independenr association of bands and artists working in the growing of the local independent escene, playing in many cities of Venezuela.

In 2010 we are working in a new CD, how will be presented on the 6th European tour, between 10 of august and 15 of September.
