Just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio is the quaint, colonial inspired campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. This quintessential small college town, with a ripe collegiate social scene, would provide the springboard for one of the Midwest’s most successful independent touring bands.

It all started at a house party in 1997, when Dan Edmondson introduced is brother, Josh, to his fraternity brother and future Oval Opus vocalist, Aaron Patrick. Soon enough, in one of the great college party clichés, Aaron and Josh unveiled acoustic guitars in the living room. What began as a playful rivalry to impress a few girls went long into the early morning as the two became lost in the thrill of making new music. The Edmondson brothers and Aaron Patrick felt an undeniable chemistry, the next day, they started a band.

Oval Opus began playing events and clubs on the campus of Miami University and in Cincinnati. Soon the band held a Wednesday night residency at the Rhythm and Blues Café in Cincinnati’s thriving Main Street District. After the young band got an opportunity to open for the legendary Doobie Bros. at Cincinnati’s Riverbend Amphitheater it was in their blood and they made the decision to hit the road.

For over a decade Oval Opus was a mainstay in clubs and on college campus’s throughout the Midwest, East Coast and Southeast. The band released four independent studio CDs, a live CD, an EP and an MP3 compilation of all of their recordings. They shared the stage with O.A.R., Maroon 5, Jason Mraz, America, Emerson Drive, Gaelic Storm, Hanson, Cowboy Mouth, Mark Broussard, and many others. In 2007 they joined Sister Hazel, Better Than Ezra and Collective Soul on “The Rock Boat”, a floating music festival. Later that same year they were shipmates once again with Barenaked Ladies and Guster for the “Ships and Dips” cruise.

Oval Opus continues to appear at events such as the Rock By The Sea music festival on St. George’s Island, FL. and at select venues in Ohio. Their music is still widely available online, as well as at shows. Oval Opus, like a family, has a legacy that endures and the rejuvenated band is eager to satisfy audiences once again.
