OG

Phabeon Henry more known as OG (Original Genius) is a solo artist home grown in the Manchester area. OG began developing his art in 2000 when he was just 14 years old, when he and his friends would rap to beats for fun in each others houses. On discovering their talent the group named themselves HIT EM UP (Holding It Til Every Mans Up) and began showcasing their talent in local youth clubs, and used their hobby as a diversion away from the gang activities acted out by their peers.

Although the Manchester underground music scene struggled to offer much opportunity for talent as noticeable as OG’s, he found ways to showcase his ability at every opportunity. He has performed at the Urban Superstars talent show amongst his group, and supported some of the most influential and successful artists in the UK’s underground scene, such as Flirta D, Tinchy Strider, Devlin and Ghetto. OG also gave one of the standout performances at the 2007 Depercussion, where he performed a solo track and a group track with group members of HIT EM UP.

OG has also been successful in the mixtape game in Manchester and has featured on a number of Manchester mixtapes, such as “Make Ends Meat” and “Dirty North”. He has also created some of his own mixtapes alongside some of manchesters best talent, these mixtapes include “Before We Hit Em High” with Hypes, “Manny’s Most Hungry” with Pockets and “Rags for the Roads” with HIT EM UP.

OG takes his influence from a wide spectrum of sources musically, including Jungle/Drum and Base, Soul, R’n’B and reggae to mention a few. His main musical influence comes from Hip Hop and artist such as Tupac (Legend), Eminem and Papoose, and not to forget local talent. Music aside OG takes influence mainly from life and the things he witnesses, and not to forget his Mum and family who have give him his strength, also last but not least the most high (GOD).

In the future you can expect big things from OG. He aims to release his solo mixtape in the near future and he sees music as a career which he aims to take to its heights. OG sees music as a tool to give back to the community, in particularly the youth of the community, who in Manchester seem to be so easily influenced by its gang culture.
