NOUGHTS AND EXES ::
What started as an intimate side project between friends grew and evolved into one of the most unique and
interesting sounds in the city. With an international line-up of musicians, a mish-mash of inspiration and a healthy
dash of creative instrumentation, Noughts & Exes have been described by fans as "breathtaking", and have
drawn comparisons to Elliott Smith, Death Cab for Cutie and Damien Rice. Their live shows are a vivid journey
of sound, and their songs tread a delicate balance between quiet intimacy and gut-wrenching intensity.
In a move that was to become something of a trademark, the band's first album "Act One, Scene One" was a
truly independent affair. Everything, from the album art to the merchandise and even their first music video 'A
Minor To Major' – which received airplay in the United States and Canada, and was directed by frontman Joshua
Wong – was conceptualized and created by band members. This home grown attitude permeates all that the band undertakes.
In November 2010, the band's second album will be released. Titled 'The Start Of Us', it was produced by the
band and Dutch producer Martijn Groeneveld of "Mailmen Studios". To get the sound they wanted, the band
recorded in nooks and crannies all across Hong Kong, then completed the mixing and mastering in the Netherlands.
The album sees Noughts & Exes really come into its own with songs refined on stages across Asia. 'The Start Of Us' features the band's complex combination of harmonies, keyboards, melodicas, whistles and cello, as well as the catchy, distinct vocal melodies which have carried the band into the hearts of their listeners.
Once again, the band did all of the creative work for the album themselves, including music videos, art-work,
photography and web presence. With a diverse line-up of musicians from East and West, and with day jobs that
include film directing, animating, script writing and event planning, O&X is uniquely positioned to fulfill their
own ambitions.
