Known for his uncanny ability to control the crowd, it's no wonder why this quick rising star is dubbed the "Maestro." To experience a party in his control is like a well orchestrated symphony, playing with the emotions of the crowd using the music as his instrument. From being #1 on radio for 7 years straight to conquering new territory in tv, this dj’s name is sure to keep ringing bells.
Born and raised in the Boogie Down BX, DJ Maestro grew up listening to Hot 97, WBLS and Kiss FM, and was influenced by dj's like Funk Master Flex, Red Alert, DJ Enuff, Kid Capri and DJ Premiere, to name a few. But it wasn't until leaving NYC that he picked up on his natural talents for dj'ing.
Maestro had taken to the entertainment field early on in his life, doing everything from acting to modeling and rapping. It was his love for music and entertainment that kept him from getting swallowed up in the streets of Edenwald Projects, a Bronx neighborhood notorious by reputation. He began acting and singing at a young age and performed with the likes of Savion Glover, Gregory Hines, Shari Belefonte and more. Later he found a natural talent and desire to write and became an emcee. His verbal prowess allowed him to share stages with such classic Hip hop groups such as Boogie Monsters, Bushbabees, Supernatural, Big Daddy Kane, and Mos Def.
Having moved from NYC to explore college in 1995, Maestro found little outlet for his creativity and hunger to spit bars in Upstate New York. It was there that he found radio. While invading the College Radio station WEOS 89.7fm (Hobart and William Smith Colleges), he quickly made a name for himself locally and rose to the top of the ranks at the station. From music director to mixer, to personality, the college station served as a training ground to propel him to the next level.
In the coming years, Maestro took advantage of any opportunity to boost his resume and status in the industry. In 1999, Maestro landed a spot at Viacom’s MTV Networks. Working in the Radio Network department, he furthered his skills and networked with key players in the industry. While honing his skills at MTV, he managed to make the cut for Teen People Magazine’s MTV photo shoot. While MTV was a stepping stone, it couldn’t satisfy Maestro’s desire to be more on the creative side.
In 2000, Clear Channel Radio bought and launched a new urban radio station in Syracuse NY. It took all of five minutes of hearing a new station with no jocks to spark the energy and persistence of DJ Maestro. After sending in demos and resumes for 6 months straight, it was finally web design, a skill he picked up in his spare time, that opened the door for him at Power 106.9 fm. But in between designing Power’s website, he studied and pulled long hours to prove his dedication. He quickly went from web designer to Promotions Assistant. Eventually he landed his own mix show, “Tha Jumpoff.” “Tha Jumpoff,” known for breaking many a record and supplying Upstate NY with that NYC flavor, became #1 in it’s time slot. This landed him the overnight shift and eventually the Promotions Director position for the station.
In 2003, Clear Channel made a change in format on WPHR, from Urban to Urban AC, and took the top jocks from WPHR and brought them over to WWHT (Hot 107.9 fm).
Maestro, being one of these jocks, assumed the evening shift and brought the Jumpoff over to Hot 107.9. The change proved to be a wise decision. Maestro went on to become #1 at nights on Hot and brought the highest ratings to the station that it had ever experienced. He continues to bring the station to new heights. Using his past experience in film and tv, Maestro also made celebrity spotlights on the #1 rated tv station in Central New York, News channel 9 (WSYR). One of his more notable achievements was when he co-hosted BET’s Rap City the Basement. He now conquers various Central NY cities. He can be seen in Rochester dj’ing for Kiss FM as their official event dj. From radio to tv to conquering clubs, he’s unstoppable! His personality and spirit keep him moving to the top, but it’s his dedication and focus that will push him over.
