NikTex is a collaboration between Nikole Texidor and Manjinder Benning.
The group formed in 2009 after Texidor received a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts
to compose bilingual pieces based on journals she had written as a young girl.
From Montreal, Nikole Texidor was heavily influenced by her father - a prominent Jazz Percussionist who performed with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The stories he told of being on the road and sharing the stage with artists such as Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix were times where she wished she had a tape recorder.
In her inheritance is her father's rhythm.
Joseph Habao Texidor 1941-2007
Rahsaan Roland Kirk 1935-1977
In 2010, NikTex released “The Power of Yang”, an orchestral neo-folk jazz album with moments of electronic sounds. It has charted in the top 10 on a few Earshot! campus radio stations and reached the Top 10 in the 2010 Lilith Fair New Talent search in Vancouver.
Benning's expertise in electronic music production adds an explosive flavour to Texidor's lyrical neo-folk jazz songs and an eclectic mix of Indian and other worldly flavours with the tabla, synths and drums on this album. But live, as a quartet, you will find heavy harmonies, percussive instruments and minimal electronics.
Texidor spent a few years in music school, toured the states, and has been on British-Colombia’s summer festival scene for the last 2 years. Benning’s other side project KarmetiK has headlined the Victoria Jazz Festival and is currently working up to an Indian Fusion release on Virgin Records India.
NikTex calls Victoria BC home and is currently working on new material for the second album.
The album was Engineered and mixed by Corwin Fox (Miss Emily Brown, Morlove, Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long, Sarah Noni Metzner)
