My Heart Is a Flame In Reverse, the centerpiece of Spider Bags’ fifth album is about as good a track as you’ll run across this year. It is a scuzzy six minute slice of cow-punk full of lament and regret. The tune continues to grow louder and louder as Dan McGee airs his words of wisdom before he kinda runs out of gas; sort of like real life. The fact that tune is surrounded by two bits of McGee’s punk past – Cop Dream / Black Eye (true story) and Tonight I Walk on Water at a combined total of 2:18 says everything about why I continue to love these guys.
Seriously, I am always confused when people say they don’t like them. They embody the rock ‘n’ roll spirit. It’s loud and a little sloppy; but most importantly it is genuine. Are they rewriting the book on music? No, but if you can’t feel the blood coursing through your veins on tracks like Oxcart Blues, Ninety Day Dog and Rolling With The Flow; well I kinda feel a little bit sorry for you.
