Horse Thief are a 5-piece out of Oklahoma and I haven’t been able to stop listening to their latest, Fear In Bliss since I got it. Seeing their set at Central Presbyterian during SXSW only increased my infatuation. Horse Thief expertly delve into the psych-folk scene. You’ll hear hints of Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear and Other Lives; their Oklahoma brothers in arms.
Our music is about more than just the songs we play, says frontman Cameron Neal, Its about losing yourself in the sound and creating an experience that sticks with you long after the show is over, That is a great quote for a band to hook me in and they live up that and then some. Since turning 40, I have been unable to sleep through the night. I have lied in the dark listening to this album and it is a spiritual experience. I remember having having the same reaction when I finally came around to Grizzly Bear. Everything around you is so still and you are sucked into the music.
Cameron Neal’s vocals are phenomenal. He has this ability to shift from sounding completely at peace to the precipice of becoming unhinged. On Dead Drum, a song where Neal asks questions of organized religion, he does some of his best work. The stripped-down Already Dead is another winner. I’d love to see the band play this around one mic during a live setting. It is a gorgeous track.
While Neal may be the frontman but this is a group in all meaning of the word – Alberto Roubert on drums, Cody Fowler on bass, Zach Zeller on keys, and Alex Coleman on guitar put together such a full sound with so much subtle nuance That along with being from Oklahoma is what brought me to the Other Lives reference.
