Two or three years ago Jefe and I trekked across Austin to catch a midnight set by Buxton. We were exhausted and a bit drunk but once Buxton got going, all was forgotten and we suddenly felt great again. Half a Native is the follow up to 2012′s excellent Nothing Here Seems Strange. Here’s the lowdown on the new album and the first track, Icebreaker. They will be down at SXSW. Maybe, if your lucky; you will see a drunk Jefe and Woody there.

Their third studio full-length and second for New West Records is a departure from the rustic sound they have become known for and adds elements of indie rock, psychedelia, honky-tonk, ambience and distortion, resulting in their most realized album to date.Having enjoyed great success regionally in their hometown of Houston and throughout the South, the band decided to shake things up for this album and headed to Los Angeles to work with producer Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver, Beachwood Sparks). “This was the first time where we really set out to make a cohesive record. In the past we would get a collection of songs, enough to make a record and go and record them. Thom really pushed us, and that dose of honesty about what songs were good enough to make the record and what weren’t really helped to create our most complete album to date and definitely the one we’re most proud of. Leaving our environment, going to California, not recording in the same way and not falling into the same traps really helped lead to that outcome, ” said lead-singer Sergio Trevino.
