Premiere: Andrew Bird, 'Capsized' from his upcoming album Are You Serious

Published: February 05, 2016

Singer-songwriter Andrew Bird will be releasing a new record, Are You Serious, later this year. Until then, CBC Music is pleased to premiere the first single from that record.

"Capsized," the opening track from the upcoming album, is an upbeat, soulful song that brings to mind the rocking soul of Bill Withers or Ray LaMontagne. It may also sound somewhat familiar to diehard Bird fans as various incarnations of the song have been a part of his live repertoire for a few years.

"I set out to make a record that's different than any I've made before," says Bird of his new album Are You Serious in a press release.

This album marks the first time Bird worked with producer Tony Berg (Edie Brickell, Aimee Mann, Peter Gabriel), who took on a bit of an editorial role during the recording process.

"We went through every part of every song, every note, scrutinizing the voicing of the chords, finding melodically interesting ways to move from one chord to the next," says Bird, who opted to work with a producer this time around to make the recording process more rigorous.

"Songwriters can get away with murder," he continues. "I wanted the songs on this album to be complex but I wanted to say things not simply exactly, but to be more direct. Novelists have editors and playwrights workshop their drama. Tony really played that role for me on this album."

Are You Serious will be available on Loma Vista Recordings later this year. You can get the first listen to "Capsized" by clicking on the player below.
