Listen to '1234' and other rare interpretations of Feist songs by Chilly Gonzales

Chilly Gonzales is taking over CBC Music homepage all day. Look out for a masterclass video, exclusive playlists, a Feist/Gonzales tête-à-tête, new music and more, all at CBCMusic.ca/chilly.

In 2006, Feist and a gang of musicians and friends retreated to Europe to record a followup to her album Let it Die. It was, more or less, 10 to 12 people living in a house and creating, with that circle of friends including Chilly Gonzales, Mocky, Jamie Lidell and Renaud Letang, as well as Feist’s touring band of Bryden Baird, Jesse Baird, Julian Brown of Apostle of Hustle, and a pre-Bahamas Afie Jurvanen.

The album they made, The Reminder, released in 2007, was a smash hit, dubbed by the New York Times as the number one album of the year, winning the Juno for both pop album and album of the year and making Feist a global superstar. The single from the album, “1234,” became ubiquitous after it was featured in an iPod commercial and propelled The Reminder to be one of the best-selling digital albums on iTunes for 2007.

As one of the producers on the album, Chilly Gonzales was featured a lot in the album’s supporting documentary about Feist and her collaborators, Look at What the Light Did Now, directed by Canadian Anthony Seck. It was released in 2010 and featured a bonus disc of rare performances. Gonzo's contribution to that bonus disc was four interpretations of songs from The Reminder, which you can now listen to below.

We’ve also included videos for the original songs so that you can compare them to Chilly Gonzales's versions.

This is all part of our Chilly Gonzales CBC Music takeover. For more content, including a Canadian masterclass video series, a conversation between the pianist and Feist and more, go to CBCMusic.ca/Chilly.
