Whitehorse’s Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet have spent the past five years developing their sound as a duo, from their traditional folk and roots origins to the invigorating rock sounds of last year’s Juno Award-winning Leave No Bridge Unburned. Now, they’ve turned up the dial up even more on their fuzzed up guitars and distorted pedals for their latest collection of songs, The Northern South Vol. 1.

The album is a blazing take on ‘50s blues tracks by American songwriters Willie Dixon, Luther Dickson, Al Reed, Chuck Berry and Robert Johnson. McClelland and Doucet transform these songs while maintaining as much authenticity to the times as possible. The duo use instruments from that era, or reproductions of those models, such as a 1958 Gretsch White Falcon, a 1959 Fender Precision bass, a 1959 Gibson GA18 and various others.

The results marry the classic melodies with Whitehorse’s incredible ability to tell compelling narratives. These songs burst with personality and electrifying production and showcase Whitehorse at their best.
