If you've heard "Love as a Weapon," the first single from Montreal's Little Scream, then you're probably excited about her new album, Cult Following.

Little Scream, a.k.a. Laurel Sprengelmeyer, describes her new album as a cave. As you approach the maw of this mysterious cavern, you will be immediately entranced by the stunning beauty of the first single — a glittering stalagmite inviting you to step farther. The thrilling vision that awaits you as you tread deeper into the cave may not be as instantly captivating as "Love as a Weapon," but the enduring, complex beauty of the sacred structure is enchanting.

Little Scream and her band drove down Highway 401 to Toronto back when the snow was still dancing over the windshield and ice was blackening the asphalt. The audience in Studio 211 was treated to a debut of the new album more than a month before its release. The performance included a dramatic twist when Little Scream broke a guitar string after her second song. Having left her alternate guitar and extra strings back in the half-light of dawn in Montreal, we raced to the nearest music store for replacement strings while Sprengelmeyer personally chatted with a studio full of her patient fans.

With the guitar restrung, the show continued and Little Scream led us deeper into her new album. Her solid band was anchored by Bucky Wheaton on drums, Mike Dubue on bass and Lisa Iwanycki on keys.
