First Play Live: Amelia Curran, They Promised You Mercy

Published: October 31, 2014

Amelia Curran is a self-confessed "lyrical snob." She loves words and lyrics and she expects songs to be well crafted. But for one of the key songs on her latest release, They Promised You Mercy, Curran's gone against her own rule: the lyrics for the chorus of "Somebody Somewhere" are simply: "na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na."

And while "na, na, na" may not be the greatest lyric ever written, it does provide a pretty great hook. It's indicative of Curran's entire new record: an uplifting group of songs. The lyrical content of the record seems to be about depression and struggle, but when you add a few "na, na, na"s to the chorus, all of that heavy lyricism lifts and it seems like it is all going to be OK.

Curran assembled a crack band for her First Play Live session, which was recorded just days after she completed the new record. That freshness is evident in these performances. Watch below.
