16 outstanding moments from the quarter-finals of the 2016 Montreal International Musical Competition

Published: May 26, 2016

The past three days at the 2016 Montreal International Musical Competition have been intense, with 23 young violinists giving their quarter-final recitals in quick succession. We heard lots of Bach and Paganini played on Stradivari, Amati and Guarneri violins, and were struck not only by the technical abilities of the contestants, but also their diverse personalities.

Somehow, from this deep pool of talent, the jury managed to select 12 semifinalists. While we wait for the next round to begin, we thought we'd recap some of the outstanding moments from quarter-final performances, which seemed to go by in a flash.
