Ugly Ghost – “Aubrey Plaza”

Published: April 23, 2019

Described as a track that’s “about the moments you miss when you aren’t present in the moments you’re in,” “Aubrey Plaza” is a consuming new track from Providence-based lo-fi rock act Ugly Ghost, the project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Jake Perreault. He previously impressed with the very catchy track “Text Me Back” last year. “Aubrey Plaza” comes via the project’s second LP, out later this year. Perreault again shows a knack for soaring guitar lines, which exude a fun, melodic, and anthemic tone amidst the contagious vocal melodies and precise uses of synth. The “And though time has passed, I’m still there,” chorus reminds me fondly of Ozma’s synth-laden power-pop aesthetic. Ugly Ghost is a project that continues to impress.

“Aubrey Plaza” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of April 2019’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Indie Rock.
