Johnathon McCombe’s third studio album, Something Good, offers a pleasingly understated rock sound — taking a cue from ’60s and ’70s rock/folk nostalgia, in addition to modern slacker-friendly acts like Mac DeMarco. Among my favorites on the album is the sixth track, “A Better Heart.” Loose, twangy guitars open with a glistening allure, as McCombe’s suave vocals emerge shortly thereafter. His voice assumes a more melancholic, yearning tone amidst developing guitar tones as the one-minute mark passes, showing some nice melodic depth fairly quickly. Another highlight is “When We’re Older,” which skips along with a more ’60s-tinted feel.
