Despite all the glitz and glamour, television talent shows are no guaranteed ticket to fame. Especially not since the Internet helped to give pure, honest artistry as big of a platform as the machine’s manufactured crap. Just ask Kehlani, who last year fulfilled her transformation from America’s Got Talent finalist to one of the best new voices — and most colorful personalities — in music.

Sonyae Elise is following a similar trajectory. The 25-year-old Newark, New Jersey native was crowned the winner of the first season of Bravo’s songwriting competition Platinum Hit back in 2011. However, despite pocketing $100,000 in cash, as well as a publishing deal with Sony and a recording deal with RCA/Jive, Sonyae’s career never quite took off.

Now under the management of Coach K, the rap veteran behind Migos, Rich The Kid and OG Maco, Sonyae has reinvented herself in her own image. She recently appeared on The Game’s The Documentary 2 (“Dedicated“) and Anderson .Paak’s Malibu (“Room In Here“). And as sweet and soulful as those contributions are, this girl also has a mean streak.

In the new video for “I Ain’t Worried,” Sonyae brandishes a pistol and a machete while displaying her rapping chops, warning other women about messing with her man. Despite her French Montana-esque boast, though, the weapons are for herself as much as they for others: “Will this n*gga even care if tonight I end it all?” she contemplates.

“I Ain’t Worried” is taken from Sonyae’s recently released mixtape S[HE’S] BR[OK]EN, which you can stream below. You can catch Sonyae at the BET Music Matters showcase at SOB’s tonight.
