Robin Thicke & Pharrell Lose First Legal Round Against Marvin Gaye’s Estate

Published: October 31, 2014

Robin Thicke‘s chart-topping “Blurred Linessingle, his collaboration with Pharrell, has sparked immense controversy ever since its released in March 2013. The main focus of the drama came from the Marvin Gaye‘s children, who filed a copyright infringement suit against the two stars. They claim the song rips off their father’s 1977 classic R&B hit  “Got To Give It Up”.

The events got even more messy this September, when court documents revealed Thicke lied to media outlets about co-writing the song. Now, Billboard is reporting that Judge John Kronstadt ruled yesterday (October 30) that the estate “made a sufficient showing that elements of ’Blurred Lines’ may be substantially similar to protected, original elements of ’Got to Give It Up.’ Defendants have identified these with particularity for purposes of analytic dissection.”

In short, Thicke and Pharrell have lost this first legal battle. The judge denied the musicians motion for summary judgement, and the case will continue with a trial currently scheduled for February 10, 2015.
