If there was any concern that One Direction’s Niall Horan couldn’t handle the limelight without his three (or four) band mates, those concerns were laid to rest this past weekend. The newly minted solo star took the stage at the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards and performed like the seasoned (solo) pro he is.

Horan and his acoustic guitar took on his first solo single “This Town” and elicited just as many screams from the young crowd as he did during his days with 1D. If the Irish singer was nervous to fill a stage alone, it didn’t show in the performance, with a pitch-perfect delivery of the emotional ballad.

Horan wasn’t the only performer at the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards to be greeted by screams. Toronto teen Shawn Mendes was also at the event, performing his latest single “Mercy” from his 2016 album Illuminate.

Mendes wrapped up the North America leg of his world tour in September, just a few days before the release of his sophomore album. The iHeartRadio MMVA winner is set to play two dates in Sydney at the start of November and then take a break before kicking off his Illuminate World Tour in the Philippines on March 18.

In addition to Horan and Mendes, the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards also featured performances from DNCE, The Vamps, Jess Glynne and Little Mix, who performed their new single “Shout Out To My Ex.”

We can’t even explain how much we @littlemix! S/O to my ex #R1TeenAwards
