Selena Gomez Returns With New Single ‘Bad Liar’

Published: May 19, 2017

Selena Gomez has once again teamed up with writing partners Julia Michaels and Justin Tratner to create her latest hit. After much teasing on social media, including Gomez sharing lyrics and video clips, “Bad Liar” dropped yesterday and continues the evolution of Gomez’s vulnerable and cheeky pop sound.

Sampling the bass line from The Talking Head’s 1977 hit “Psycho Killer,” the song’s lyrics have a much less gruesome subject matter, instead focusing on Gomez trying to distance herself from her ex.

According to Tranter, the idea to use the Talking Heads sample was courtesy of iHeartRadio MMVA performer Michaels, who along with Gomez is a huge fan of the band.

The trio, who previously worked together on “Good For You,” “Hands To Myself” and more, have been sharing pics from the studio to promote the new single, which marks Gomez’s first solo release since 2015’s Revival. Earlier this year, Gomez collaborated with Kygo on the track “It Ain’t Me” and covered Yaz’s “Only You.”

Photographer Petra Collins, who photographed Gomez for her “Bad Liar” promo pics and video, says the singer arrived for the shoot after leaving the hospital where she was being treated for lupus, saying they decided to leave her hospital bracelets on. The decision to appear with bandages comes at an interesting time for Gomez, who has come under fire for her series 13 Reasons Why, which has been criticized for glamorizing teen suicide. While the bracelets and bandages could be seen as an effort to make others suffering from lupus feel less alone, it could also be interpreted as a provocative move that romanticizes sickness.

In addition to the new track, Gomez has also dropped a music video for “Bad Liar” on Spotify, which shows the singer lying in bed while bandaged and appearing on a small TV in an empty bedroom. It’s unclear whether “Bad Liar” is a one-off or will act as the lead single for Gomez’s next album, but we’re hoping for the latter.
