It’s been one year since Selena Gomez made her return to the spotlight at the 2016 American Music Awards and last night’s performance was a much different Selena than the one we saw accept Favourite Pop/Rock Female in 2016.

This time last year, Gomez made an emotional speech at the annual awards show, telling fans she had cancelled her Revival Tour and sought treatment to help deal with depression and anxiety. This year, Gomez has still been forced to endure hardships, including receiving a life-saving kidney transplant and recently ending her relationship with fellow singer The Weeknd.

Before appearing on stage, Gomez debuted a new blonde hairstyle on the red carpet, wearing a fitted leather dress.

With Sunday night’s performance of Gomez’s new single “Wolves” with Marshamello, it seemed like the perfect time for the pop star to celebrate, but following the performance many viewers began speculating that Gomez had lip synced during the live show.

Rumours quickly began swirling that Gomez had opted to not sing live after suffering a panic attack backstage, but the singer has yet to comment on Sunday night’s performance. Following the performance, Gomez mouthed the words ‘Thank you’ and later thanked her ‘best friend’ Petra Collins on Instagram for helping bring Gomez’s vision to life with the performance.

Gomez released the official video for “Wolves” this week as well, which features the singer walking around a public pool on her own while wearing a number of high fashion gowns and pantsuits.

Sporting wet hair for the video, Gomez writhes on the floor of the change room showers and stands on the diving board before walking on water over the large lap pool. EDM artist Marshmello doesn’t make an appearance, but his famous mask can be seen floating in the pool at the end of the video.

The new single is from Gomez’s upcoming untitled third studio album, which should be released sometime in 2018.
