Toronto-based R&B singer songwriter Jayd Ink cracked the code last night when her version of the brand new single “Codes” was chosen to be released on the latest episode of The Launch. It all began when she auditioned with a rendition of Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” as well as her own original song “Deep Under.”
In interviews, Ink jokes that by preparing to audition for the show with “Sorry,” she “manifested” celebrity mentor Julia Michaels, who wrote the song. It all worked in her favour as Michaels herself, along with music producer Ian Kirkpatrick and record executive Scott Borchetta, were impressed by Ink’s smooth voice. They put her through to the next stage of the competition where she had to record and perform her version of “Codes” in 48 hours.
Ink and Kirkpatrick worked closely together adjusting the song from its original straight-up pop demo version to the soulful R&B single that Ink then performed in front of a live audience.
Ink delivered a captivating performance and after some deliberation, the mentors chose her version of “Codes” to launch.
“Codes” is following in the chart-topping footsteps of its launched predecessors to date—Logan Staats’ “The Lucky Ones,” Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine’s “Ain’t Easy,” (which was co-written by Camila Cabello), The Static Shift‘s “Wide Awake,” and POESY‘s “Soldier of Love.”
