Iggy Azalea Returns With Fiery New Single And Video For ‘Mo Bounce’

Published: March 24, 2017

It’s been a year since we’ve had any new solo material from Iggy Azalea, with the Aussie rapper’s last single “Team” hitting airwaves in March 2016 and acting as the lead single from her second studio album Digital Distortion. Now in March 2017, the album has yet to drop and still has no release date in sight, but Azalea is back with a new single that was worth the wait.

“Mo Bounce” hit the airwaves yesterday and showcased Azalea’s ability to pair rhymes with a radio-friendly backing track. Expanding on Azalea’s previous ode to booties with Jennifer Lopez on 2014’s aptly title “Booty,” “Mo Bounce” urges listeners to put mo(re) bounce in what they do, from beats to moving butts.

As promised throughout her social media teasers this week, Azalea dropped a video for “Mo Bounce” and is keeping the party going. Enlisting the help of fierce little girls and their dance moves, as well as equally fierce grown women, “Mo Bounce” was shot in Hong Kong by director Lil Internet.

Sporting her trademark deadpan delivery throughout the video, Azalea twerks with the best of them, while occasionally taking breaks to stand back and let the other women in her video show off. While the visuals for “Mo Bounce” were obviously created with the male gaze in mind, Azalea’s almost exclusively-female cast, including young girls showing off a high level of dance training, adds an element of empowerment that is infrequently depicted in rap videos.

Not usually an artist known for political statements, Azalea donned a patch on her jeans in one scene that reads “My pussy grabs back,” a statement of course directed at President Trump.

Iggy spoke with BBC’s Zane Lowe about Digital Distortion earlier this week, revealing that the upcoming album, a follow-up to 2014’s The New Classic, is “99.9 per cent done.”

Iggy revealed that she produced the album herself, with the process bringing her back to her mixtape days. Digital Distortion was completed with 12 new tracks in 2016, but following her break-up with fiancé Nick Young, Iggy says that she scrapped the entire album except for one track and decided to start over.

Speaking of “Mo Bounce,” Azalea said, “It’s probably the most fun record on my album. I’ve thought a really long time about what I wanted to put out. When you don’t put out music for a long time, people think a lot about what the first song is and that’s just at 3 o’clock in the morning before I go to sleep. It keeps me up at night,” said Azalea. “I was going to say something super-serious, and then, I don’t know. I’ve been in such a good mood lately. I have all that stuff that I think it’s important for people to hear on the album, but I just want to say something fun. I just want to twerk in a video and have a good time.”
