Get Weird With It: ICONS Features Weird Al Yankovic

Published: February 16, 2018

From a young teen sending a taped performance to a radio station to a world-renowned musical parody artist, Alfred Mathew ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic has become a legendary figure to aspiring musicians and comedians alike. This week’s ICONS episode focuses on the artist’s professional life and how he made it to where he is today.

Yankovic was born in 1958 and raised in California where he would eventually earn a BA in Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, but he was only in high school when he recorded his first parody song. He sent his first recorded song to the Dr. Demento Radio Show, and the comedic ballad aired shortly after. From there Yankovic’s career took off, eventually propelling him into the title of ‘King of Parody’.

Forty-two years have passed since his first radio debut, but Yankovic is very much relevant and still very much loved. He’s even admitted that he has no idea what he would be doing if he hadn’t gotten his first record deal. Much’s ICONS takes us through Yankovic’ from the beginning to where he is now.
