With only a few days left until the August 25 release of Fifth Harmony’s self-titled third studio album, the now four-piece is at a make or break point. Following the exit of original member Camila Cabello, the girl group has taken some time to recalibrate and prepare for their next move.
In June, Fifth Harmony released their first post-Cabello single “Down” with Gucci Mane. The song was business as usual, with the track sounding like a carbon copy of the group’s biggest singles from their 2016 album 7/27. If the goal was to show their sound was no different with or without Cabello’s vocals, “Down” would be considered a success. If the women were hoping to prove they can evolve beyond their hit tracks like “Work From Home” and “Worth It,” the single “Down” fell short.
Although “Down” did not deliver on the band’s promise that their new disc was the ‘most authentic’ they’ve ever sounded, their new single “Angel” thankfully has. Just released today, the 90s inspired R&B groove shows growth and maturity that we have not yet heard from 5H. The women have been put through the ringer as a result of Cabello’s high-profile exit and are finally channeling their emotion into their music. Anger can be a person’s downfall, but in the case of Fifth Harmony’s “Angel,” the four women are focused and ready to show the world another hard-hitting and sexy new track.
Produced by frequent Justin Bieber collaborators Skrillex and Poo Bear, “Angel” is an R-rated pop song that showcases all four members of Fifth Harmony in the bravado-filled, hip hop inspired single.
We’ve now heard two new songs from Fifth Harmony’s upcoming 10-track disc and while the results are split, the anticipation is high.
Watch Fifth Harmony perform alongside Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Lorde, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd and more at the MTV VMA’s on Sunday, August 27 at 8E/5P.
