We’ve all seen the world’s most famous selfie, right? Ellen DeGeneres’ star-studded, Twitter-breaking selfie at this year’s Oscars was so popular that it still continues to spawn other crowded selfies by celebs and fans alike. Unsurprisingly, this is now also the most expensive selfie in history.
Publicis CEO Maurice Levy, who handles international marketing for Samsung — the phone used to take the selfie — has now estimated that photo to be worth somewhere between $800 million and $1 billion. We’re going to guestimate that our selfies are worth a few bucks, if even.
This value is based on the photo’s popularity, as it was viewed 37 million people worldwide according to Twitter and the moment was watched on the show’s television broadcast by 43 million viewers. Again, our photos probably get viewed by a few handfuls of people. Good job, Ellen (and Samsung)! Now can we borrow Jennifer Lawrence and Brad Pitt for our selfies?
