Coachella Weekend Two: Less Makeouts, More Surprise Guests

Published: April 20, 2015

Coachella wrapped up with its second weekend of festivities last night and while there are a million and one things to love about the Cali fest, the clear headline makers were the special guests that popped up. And while Madonna didn’t appear onstage to make out with anyone this time around, weekend number two had its fair share of big named surprises.

Instead of Madonna, Drake brought out another love of his: Nicki Minaj. To be specific, and to quote Drizzy, “the love of my life.” Of course, he meant that more in a family way than romantic because, as we’ve all seen on Instagram, Nicki may be engaged to rapper Meek Mill. In fact, Drake doesn’t specify what he’s congratulating his friend Nicki on, but he does say that out loud before giving her a hug in front of everyone. Can this be the confirmation we’ve all been waiting for? (If you squint, you can spot that diamond ring on Nicki’s finger!)

Nicki also joined David Guetta during his DJ set to perform her song, Hey Mama. With so much Coachella love, one can only hope for a headlining spot next year!

Elsewhere, Drake’s OVO pal The Weeknd brought out an even bigger guest, Kanye! Kanye hopped onstage during The Weeknd’s set to perform his own mini set of songs including All Day, Black Skinhead and Can’t Tell Me Nothing. Hope The Weeknd was okay with that! [Warning: explicit language in the video below.]

Kanye also made a quick appearance at Belgian pop star Stromae’s set. The two worked together back in 2009 on a remix of Stromae’s song Alors on Danse and although Kanye can’t be heard on the clip below, you can see fans lose it when he jumps onstage during said song. If you don’t know who Stromae is, you need to look him up ASAP. He’s Kanye-approved so you know he’s good.

And to cap it all off, Florence + The Machine brought out indie singer-songwriter Father John Misty to accompany her and her broken foot for a soothing cover of the Everly Brothers’ Love Hurts. Although it’s not as high profile as the appearances mentioned above, it was still one of the most beautiful surprise collabs of the weekend (and we highly recommend you check out Father John Misty because he is uh-mazing).

So while there were no viral make outs, surprise appearances were happening left and right and it’s part of the wonder of a huge festival like Coachella. You never know who’s going to show up, and we can’t wait to see what other surprises future festivals will hold for us this summer! After all, festival season has just started!
