Although 2017 will mostly be remembered as the year of weird politics, hurricanes, and a lot of dragons on Game of Thrones, it should also be noted that this has been an outstanding year for music. While some of the biggest artists have already dropped huge albums, we still have more new records to look forward to in the coming months. Thankfully, 2017 as a silver lining and its music.
Just this week we have seen new music videos from some of the most groundbreaking female musicians, including the return of Miss Fergie Ferg and the next chapter and Lana Del Rey’s Hollyweird saga.

it’s been more than 10 years since former Black-Eyed Peas member Fergie dropped her stunning solo debut The Dutchess. The pop, hip-hop and dance album featured the huge hits “London Bridge,” “Glamorous” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” with the album still as fresh today as it was in 2006. It’s been a long time coming, but Fergie is finally releasing her follow up with Double Dutchess, due out on September 22.
For her second single “You Already Know,” Fergie dialed up the fierceness with guest spot from Nicki Minaj. The perfect pair take turns, with Fergie putting fans on high alert that she’s back. The new song is a blending of the past three decades in music and already has a big fan in Seth Rogen, who scored his first shout out from Minaj. Consider us jealy.
In last week’s new video from Jessie Reyez, the Toronto-raised singer walked the streets of Amsterdam and Paris for her Calvin Harris-track “Hard To Love.” This week, Reyez is returning to her roots and exploring the stunning city and luscious mountainside of Colombia where her family is from.
In the stunning new video, Reyez wanders through an old house and follows a little boy through the city as she remembers her late uncle and friend. “Great One” is a sharp departure from Reyez’s previous releases “Figures” and “Shutter Island,” with the singer continually proving she’s a musical master at every emotion.
“White Mustang” — Lana Del Rey
Singer Lana Del Rey directs her famous longing stare at Icelandic actor Eðvarð Egilsson in her new video for “White Mustang.” The third single from Del Rey’s 2017 album Lust for Life, “White Mustang” features the singer looking out of her futuristic mansion at the CGI version of Hollywood in 2080-ish. After being ignored by Egilsson at their house party, Del Rey takes his white Mustang for spin around the city, with the two eventually meeting up to perform a choreographed dance in the middle of an underpass.
It’s possible the new video is part of a longer story line that will make more sense when Del Rey releases her next single. OR we just don’t get it. Either way, it’s another stunning song from Del Rey’s fifth album.
“Dreams Tonite” — Alvvays
Most fans of Toronto foursome Alvvays, including the band itself, aren’t old enough to remember Montreal’s Expo ’67. Thanks to the band’s new video for their soothing track “Dreams Tonite,” viewers can visit one of Canada’s biggest historical events. Director Matt Johnson seamlessly places the band members throughout archival footage from Expo ’67, blurring the lines between reality and history.
“Easy” — Sky Ferreira
Edgard Wright’s critically and commercially successful 2017 film Baby Driver became known just as much for its incredible soundtrack as it did for its high-speed car scenes. In the film, out now, singer Sky Ferreira plays the mother of Ansel Elgort’s Baby character, but the viewer only hears Ferreira sing for a few seconds near the end of the film. Thankfully, the studio has released a full version of Ferreira performing The Commodores’ “Easy.” It’s just so pretty…and easy.
