6 Musicians Who Have Appeared On Game of Thrones

Published: July 25, 2017

Since the show began, Game of Thrones has had some major ties to real-life musicians.

For starters, Kristian Nairn, better known as Hodor, had a lengthy career as a guitarist and DJ before appearing on Game of Thrones while Alfie Allen, who plays the humbled Theon Greyjoy, is actually the brother of English pop star Lily Allen.

However, the show likes to take things a step further by casting actual recording artists as regular cast members and occasional guests. Most recently, Ed Sheeran made his Game of Thrones debut in the Season 7 premiere as a Lannister Soldier—one of the longer celebrity cameos seen on the show, at roughly three minutes of screen time.

But, Sheeran isn’t the only real-life musician to grace the mythical world of Game of Thrones. Here are six other artists you might have missed.

Of Monsters and Men (Episode: “The Door”)

Next to Sheeran, the most recent guest appearance by musicians was in Season 6’s arguably most devastating episode. Not only did GoT fans learn the story behind Hodor’s name, but they saw the popular Icelandic folk-pop group Of Monsters and Men portray a group of traveling musicians as part of the theatre troupe Arya Stark bonds with while in Braavos.

Mastodon (Episode: “Hardhome”)

With its shared love of dark fantasy and blood magic, it was only time before a metal band would make a cameo in Game of Thrones. Members of the renowned Atlanta metal band Mastodon made guest appearances as menacing, north-of-the-Wall wildlings in Season 5 of the show. Mastodon’s Brann Dailor also appeared alongside Sheeran in the Season 7 premiere as a white walker.

Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody (Episode: “Walk of Punishment”)

Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody makes an appearance in Westeros when he leads a group of Roose Bolton loyalists in a sing-along of “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” in Season 4. Among all the musicians that appear in Game of Thrones, Lightbody’s rendition of the tune is a soundtrack standout for the series.

Sigur Rós (Episode: “The Lion and the Rose”)

Of Monsters and Men isn’t the only Icelandic pop band to make an appearance on Game of Thrones. Post-rockers Sigur Rós appear in one of the earlier episodes of Season 4 as a band of minstrels hired to play music at the doomed wedding of Margaery Tyrell and Joffery Lannister. The group is but a few of many characters that had to endure the wrath of Joffery.

Coldplay’s Will Champion (Episode: “The Rains of Castamere”)

Coldplay drummer Will Champion made an appearance in the gut-wrenching Season 3 “The Rains of Castamere” episode as a drummer at the bloody Red Wedding. Swapping his instrument for a crossbow, Champion’s character helped murder the Starks. But this wasn’t the only time Coldplay was involved with Game of Thrones. The band previously teamed up with some of the cast members to create a mock musical of the series in celebration of Red Nose Day.

Carice Van Houten (Seasons 2 – 6)

Game of Thrones fans know Carice Van Houten as the sensually sinister priestess Melisandre, but the magnetic actress was a singer long before she started giving birth to shadows. The Dutch actress released her first solo album See You on the Ice in 2012 and has still made time to create hauntingly beautiful melodies since her acting career took off.
